Uncanny X-Men

No, this is not about the movie.

I seem to recall back in high school, about '87, I read a music mag featuring indie/ new wave bands at the time. I think it was Australian because it featured Midnight Oil and the Models.

Then there was a long article about a band called Uncanny X-men. Anybody heard of them?

Seems to be an Australian phenomenon. I have read and heard about them from fans (who are all pretty much from Oz), but I've not heard anything by them. I list them when people ask about bands from Oz...

very good quirky new wave/pop band from oz......their CD is on ebay from time to time for a decent price. Well worth getting

Well, must have been forgettable even to most australians. You don't even see them in 80's indie rock compilations that feature bands from down under, e.g. hoodoo gurus, scientists, died pretty, etc.

I think you don't see them on australian comps maybe because they may have been like many other good artists in other lands that never made it to comps, or rarely. Honestly, if you heard their music, you'd likely want it if you like exellent new wave. Not sure why, but for me, I've sorta always likened them to The Monks with respect to their sound.

The Uncanny X-men were led by an extroverted lead singer named Brian Mannix and they had a very big hit down here with the album "Cos' life hurts" that included two very sucessful singles "Everybody wants to work", and "Fifty Years".

Whilst in high school their tour and album was more than competitive with the Listen Like Thieves INXS album that came out about the same time in terms of popularity.

During their time 84-85 they were a very popular pop band, but like many of their brethren they flew too close to the sun and subsequently their follow up album was to be their undoing....
