London Calling was a Rock record, not a Punk Rock record. When recording it they wanted to compete with Bruce Sprinsteen (who, ironically enough, demanded that if The Clash got to do a double LP then he should get to do a double as well, hence The River is a 2 record set)

I think Peter V was on-the-money in his post (first one). Punk was more than just the music. It was a whole cultural-thing and history has shown the Pistols to be the strongest in OVERALL impact.

I believe the poll has achieved the purpose of good conversation, it's been lively and spirited. However, it's phrasing is open to interpretation as evidenced by the debate. Is the "greatest" to be judged on the merits of preference, or cultural relevance? And cultural relevance often passes through the filter of ones personal preference.
What qualities defines "greatest"? The music and/or writing(subject matter), live shows, style, longevity, quality of longevity, impact(cultural relevance) etc.?
There are great bands that fall into one or some of the aforementioned. Really, greatest comes down to ones personal preference. But, in the great scheme of things it is relevance and impact upon what came after that really means anything in the larger debate.
So, with that said, I have to go with the SEX PISTOLS. The very name is synonymous with punk AND it's attitude to the lay person. I think that part of the greatness and wonder of punk, is that you didn't have to know how to play your instrument especially well to do it. Siouxsie & The Banshees weren't proficient on their instruments either, but they went on to become more so. While McLaren may have "packaged" the style of punk, he didn't manufacture the angry young men, he only channeled it in a direction that benefited all involved?!?!
