If anyone watches "Heroes" (great show btw!) , Nathan Petrelli & his wife dance to Roxy Music's "Avalon" .

Most of these in-store music experiences you're having come from either XM or Sirius or from DMX or Muzak. Yes, good ole fashioned Muzak updated their business a long time ago and now provides multi-channel music to retail locations - either via sattelite or via CDs that get sent to the stores.

If you hear a consistent well selected mix at a place that you KNOW doesn't have a cool person working there who set it up - you can bet it's the '80s channel on XM.

I heard "Always" by World Party in JC Penney today. But I think that was actually a minor hit. Still, it caught my ear for sure.

I heard R.E.M.'s "So. Central Rain" at Walmart of all places. The next song was "Ricky Don't Lose That Number". Weird.

Was in Tony Roma's enjoying ribs and beer while listening to a nice 80's mix of piped in music including Duran Duran, Gary Numan, Howard Jones, and Bronski Beat.

Last night in Lowe's I heard The Fixx's "Sign of Fire". That got a little airplay in my area, but hardly a hit. Great song.

The Swiss Chalet BBQ chicken joint (a Canadian chain) on west Broadway always seems to play new wave. Weird because the clientele is either seniors 60+ or young families with toddlers and babies.

I can name all the songs so maybe they're jot too obscure, and it drives my wife and friends nuts that I name each song as it comes on. Last time I got takeout they were playing a megamix of Frankie Goes To Hollywood singles. The time before that Heaven 17.

Slightly off topic becuase it wasn't at a restaurant or bar, but Wells Fargo Bank was playing "Heartbeat" by the Psychedelic Furs the other day. I actually wanted the teller line go slow so I could hear the entire song!

Seems it was a very new wave day today... met client at Souplantaion/Sweet Tomatoes for lunch, heard Dexy's Midnight Runners - Jackie Wilson Said--blown away... I think obscure!

At the Credit Union: "Cruel to be Kind" by Dave Edmonds... and later tonight at Trader Joe's: Blondie's "Call Me!" Which I started to sing along with many a folks in the check-out line... and to think that song is 29 years old! (1978, right?)

Resurrecting this thread ... I walked into a thrift store this weekend, and they were playing "Commercial Breakup," a non-single from Thomas Dolby's debut album. Very weird.
