A lot of tbe recent jingles have been identified. It seems to me that Target is also using a punkish sounding song with a female vocalist in some ads. I don't know if that's old or newer.
I worked for an advertising agency in the mid-90's. We tried to get the use of the Cure's "I Will Always Love You" for an anti-tobacco Public Service Announcement for teenagers. It wasn't because of the lyrics...they wanted to use the music bed without the lyrics because they thought it was recognizable enough and younger kids could relate to it. The Cure wouldn't authorize it because they were smokers. Or maybe that was Toad, the Wet Sprocket's "Something's Always Wrong." I can't remember because I wasn't in any way involved win the negotiations.
I don't know much about the Buzzcocks lawsuit for that Toyota RAV that used "What Do I get." The ad agency should have gotten their permission first. If they went ahead and used it without their permission, that's illegal.
It isn't surprising that you're hearing more 80's songs on these advertisements. Advertisers have always gone after the 30-50 crowd because they're the biggest spenders. People that age remebers these songs or at least remember the era and it teases the nostalgia nerve, which puts buyers in the frame of mind of wanting to spend money.
