At This Very Moment, Four People Are Listening.

Folks,

Right now, as I type this, four people are listening to Eighties Friday. Which begs the question: "Why do I do this?"

Well, here's why:

I've always felt that the great tracks we're such fans of here on the board were the victims of circumstance. I'll never forget the moment in the early eighties when uber-FM-consultant Lee Abrams sent out the edict that rock stations didn't need new wave anymore. Suddenly, an environment that caused A Flock Of Seagulls and Modern English to have huge hits evaporated overnight, consigning them to the one-hit-wonder ghetto, and slamming the door on other fantastic bands that would rise within the next few years, releasing terrific and groundbreaking music that would never get the audience it deserved.

I was lucky enough back then to work at one of the few stations that devoted itself to giving those artists a chance, and even though I now primarily do the same thing for today's new bands, I still think I need to devote time to promoting those old tracks. Most of the time, the band isn't around to appreciate it, and many of them aren't even around to enjoy a renaissance, but attention should be paid, and I feel that's my job.

So I've got this web station that can be heard anywhere in the world, with a potential audience in the millions, celebrating this kind of music in a way that wants to reach out to new listeners and make them aware of how important these tracks are.

And I've got four listeners. Frankly, that's depressing. Maybe that's the audience I have to get used to. But I think I can do better.
