Songs which the 12" remix improved the original

Ok I'll bite, seeing as I own tons of these things in one format or another.
Remixes aren't always longer versions, but they should be different in the sense that bass, drum (machine?) and/or hook become more prominent and may be completely replaced in some instances by new instrumentation. Compare Bizarre Love Triangle as remixed by Shep Pettibone vs. Stephen Hague's version and you can here the difference right away.

If its labeled an extended remix and it only contains 15 sec. extra - I would have considered this a major rip off. If a track is so labeled, then the song should be a lot longer with instrumental breaks at the beginning, middle and or end (making them club friendly).

Don't get me started on "remix" vs "re-edit" where the original release is taken and recut to be longer, but no new instrumention is added or rearranged. Shake the Disease (Edit the Shake Version) is a prime example of this as is Cetu Javu's Situations

Yello's I Love You was a great improvement on a great song IMO, as are the examples I cited above.

and on a recent "obscure 80's" forum note: the devo extended versions of "that's good" and "speed racer" are blatant examples of the quickie 12" version- cut and paste and repeat, all the way. oh, i'm not saying i don't love them, but throw us a bone, devo!

Heh...the worst offender of the "quickie 12" is Ministry, with their "remixes" of "Thieves" and "Burning Inside." The former differs from the LP version by only 30 seconds of a mid-song instrumental bit; the latter adds about 30 seconds of noise to the LP version. (That 12" is still worth getting for the live version of Skinny Puppy's "Smothered Hope".)

On the other hand, I prefer Ministry's 12" mixes of "(Everyday Is) Halloween" [the 10-minute version] and "The Nature of Love" to the original versions.

The Thieves remix is definitely nothing special, but Burning Inside has more going on. The music is the same, but there are a lot of added samples throughout the song that aren't on the album version. They basically played the 12" version live during the Mind tour.

I also like the 12-inch mix of Icehouse's "Crazy" on the original '87 CD release. Lots of oomph!
