Rodney On The 'Roq

For those that never lived in Southern California and caught his show Sunday nights at midnight, I can't possibly tell you how awesome his show was back in the 80's. The general theme of the show had a punk flavor to it, but he sprinkled in a few chick groups, as well as a handful of 60's-sounding English bands. But his show seemed to be much more than all that and you'd always hear something new, whether Rodney just brought something in from nearby Poo-Bah's record store (a converted house in Pasadena) or from someone dropping off a demo cassette at the studio's back door.

And for a while there I had the cassette deck in the record mode a lot of the time hoping to catch the real obscure, the underground or whatever. At any rate, my brother recently digitized these Rodney on the 'Roq tapes for me and I am in the process of downloading them to my harddrive and editing them to create a Rodney On The 'Roq cd- complete with some song ID's, station ID's from a few artists and, of course, genuine, authentic record noise.

This has already brought back a lot of good memories for me and I can't wait til the cd is done. So as a "thank you" to the many here who have been kind enough to help me out in my short time here so far (and assuming this falls under the catagory of music "sharing"), I'd be happy to burn a copy of this for anyone who may be interested in one. Let me know and I'll keep you posted on my progress.

Very Nice Dave! I grew up in Fullerton and have very fond memories of KROQ! I remember reading in bed trying not to fall asleep before the show, always making sure I had a cassette ready to record [:D] I'd usually fall asleep but would listen to the full show the next day on tape. Man do I wish I still had those tapes [:(]

Hey great stuff Dave. You could do your mix a great service if you start it just like Rodney did, with the Modern Folk Quartet's "This Could Be the Night". Man, few things are more emotive of those days than hearing this track and expecting Rodney's raspy voice to take me through his sometimes great, sometimes weird, and sometimes just godawful selections. I only remember the good stuff though. [8D]

BTW, Posh Boy released a 26-track glomming together of his two Rodney on the Roq Vol 1 & 2 LPs. My LP copies are pretty chunked now, but I managed to grab its digitized contents off somebody. Lemme know if you want any of those tracks:
