Save your new wave records!

Someone donated a lot of old 78s to Syracuse University; it's a gold mine for people interested in 20th century popular music.

So, to those of us with substantial new wave collections (vinyl especially, but by no means exclusively): think about donating them someday (or willing them) to a university library. Popular Music Studies is an increasingly important academic discipline, and scholars want to work with primary artifacts as often as possible.

This may be an odd request, but I work in a similar field--the history of books--in which I wish people 2-300 years ago would have kept more of their books, so archival collections are important to scholars like myself...I'm afraid that people, in general, dump or throw away their vinyl after they get something on CD or whatnot (or their old CDs when they get a remastered version!), and while they're not worth much now they'll be gold a bit down the road.

I go back and forth deciding whether to thin out some of my old cd's that I kept after buying remasters. Your suggestion is a good one; I think I will gather them up and donate them as a collection someday. Now if only I can get the time to dig around and find them all!

The funny thing is, I have bought many records in my collection from stock that college libraries had dumped when they got rid of all of their vinyl.

It might be worth one making an agreement with the college to ensure that the records are respected.

Assuming I don't have to sell it off beforehand to pay for some gas or food or something just as frivolous.
