Great albums bogged down by awful production

I've always had a strong dislike for OMD's debut album. I've always found this strange myself as I love most OMD albums and pretty much everything they've ever done. So why do I hate the debut? Well, after giving it a spin after work today, I remembered why. The production is AWFUL, flat as a pancake. It's a shame cause it has some pretty decent tunes and one or two great ones (Electricity!). But it's so badly produced it's almost unlistenable.

What other new wave albums do you think suffer from this?

Much has been written about Bill House's who-gives-a-shit production on The Hitmen's "Aim for the Feet" and I've written even more about how Robin Geoffrey Cable destroyed Private Lightning's self-titled album. Those two are probably the worst major-label production disasters I can think of off the top of my head. Cable, in particular, seemed like he was actively trying to wreck the album.

I always thought The Plimsouls production could have been better. Songs like "A Million Miles Away" are adequate but I bet someone like Steve Lillywhite could have made those guitars really ring!

The Human League's first two albums Holiday '80 and Travelogue reveal some dull and noisy mastering. But it wasn't their fault. They were not commercially successful and a good production didn't come cheaply those days.
But it's not surprising that just a few badly produced albums come to mind, when most of the time what you're paying attention to, are good productions.

Toyah's albums were okay, but I liked her siblings, Michael's and Janet's, stuff better.

Furniture's 'Food Sex and Paranoia' immediately springs to mind. Great tracks lost in a thick aural pea soup. A shame, as if they had the same production team as the Lovemongers then it would have been great.

Wasn't the noisy and dull mastering the whole point? You know, an avant-garde in-yo'-mouf at what has gone before? And wasn't the first album Reproduction?

That's true, Reproduction was their first album, Holiday '80 being an EP in between the two albums.
