I figured a thread this was in order given what happened today.
Of all places to find a new wave music connection, it was here in my local church this morning!
How you may wonder[?]
Well.. turns out that today we elected our new permanent minister who came to LI from an out of state church to 'demo' for the preaching job.
I happened to have prior knowledge that the minister candidate was a middle aged musician-song writer & NW music aficionado which gave me hope that we would have someone who could breath some much needed fresh air into our congregation.
After the service, I had the opportunity to approach him and discuss his musical background. After touching on the subject of NW music he asked me in his splendid Liverpool accent, "av u erd of the baand O-M-Dee?" to which I happily replied 'OF COURSE!'
He went on to tell me and my wife that back in his youth he played with numerous bands in the Moreton area. Among them, founding OMD members Humphreys and McCluskey when they were with a group called 'Hitlerz Underpantz'. He even said that he lent them their first synth for a gig! How cool is that? (I'm sure there's more to follow..)
So..
Anyone else have a tale of an unlikely link to the NW music scene or culture? Do Tell..
