Artists For Art's Sake

Postby club80 » Sat Feb 28, 2009 3:37 am

Over the years, there have been several cases of band members just being officially in the band for image or aesthetic reasons only.

In the punk/new wave era, two come to my mind immediately.

Sid Vicious who couldn't play anything on bass but was, for image reasons, thought to be a better Sex Pistol than Glen Matlock.

The second is the "dancer" in Happy Mondays who was just there to dance on stage. His name is Mark "Bez" Berry who actually got to play some percussion instruments with the band later.

Who else comes to mind?

We didn't sell a lot of records, but somehow we left an impression.

Gary Numan's brother used to pretend to play sax on stage. I actually met him and told him that I admired his playing, before I found out the ugly truth!! Most other fans had known for years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones had (have? They apparently got back together) a guy who does nothing but dance onstage, but he's considered part of the band.

Would it be unkind to mention 2 of the Thompson Twins?

The other guy in Wham [:D] Was his name Ridgely or something like that. Not a big fan of them, as you can probably see.

I think Paul Rutherford from Frankie Goes To Hollywood would qualify.

From what I've read about the writing and making of "Welcome to the Pleasuredome" I wonder if most of the FGTH members fall under this.

Except, Holly Johnson wasn't the only member of the band to come in with "credentials". Paul Rutherford was in punk/glam band Spitfire with Budgie from Siouxsie and The Banshees and they even released a record.

I understand that Alannah Currie and Joe Leeway were in the Thompson Twins mainly for art & choreography. Tom Bailey was in charge of the music.

I once read that David Sylvian only wore glasses for aesthetic reasons. Is this true?
This is taking the subject into a different area??? Sorry.
