Morrissey death rumour hits Twitter

Postby thegoldenyear » Fri Nov 13, 2009 3:03 pm

A couple of us have just noticed this spreading over Twitter, from an account with more than 1.4 million followers, @themoment, which links back to a legitimate New York Times blogsite (http://themoment.blogs.nytimes.com/).

The "tweet" in question: "Is Morrissey really dead? Please tell me it's not true. It's what I am hearing! HS"

Time stamp is 12:15 a.m. EST.

NOTE: The blog's URL DOES NOT reflect the action on Twitter.

Two hours later, no news is good news.

"Reputable" news outlets aren't even reporting on a hoax, let alone something worse. At this point, it looks like a stray "tweet" issued by a powerful Twitter presence, made in the wee hours of the morning, falling upon mostly deaf ears.

Let's hope it stays that way.

I'm not accusing anyone but Blir has hated Morrissey ever since Moz rejected his advances during Blir's "experimental" college years. Although this unrequited love was never reciprocated, it fueled the angst that propelled Morrissey to write many of his best songs including "Bliriam, It Was Really Nothing". Moz of course, altered the title to protect the anonymity of his one time fan club chairman.

Blir however, has never forgiven the object of his admiration for spurning him. This deep wound has festered and now drives him to hurl shoes full of frothy piss at those he disdains in a misguided attempt to fill an inner void caused by the romantic snub.

In any case, it's clear the rumor was initiated by someone with an "if I can't have you, no one can" mentality!

...walks head-down a drizzly dark road, hands stuffed into trenchcoat, singing Dan Hill's "Sometimes When We Touch".

That, djcraig, may be the singular best post I've ever seen on these forums. It lacks nothing. Visual aides, subtle as well as overt satire, and packaged in a neat, informative wikipedia-esque way.

Superb.

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it and kudos to Blir for being secure enough to play along with my poking fun at his direction.
