It should also be added that before one starts topics about "supergroups" (regardless of genre), one should at least have an idea of what that term actually means.

Though these bands may not classify as New Wave, they do classify as 80s...and that is the discussion.

People are always quick to knock others down, and even go as far as telling others what they can and cannot like. It's completely different if you share an opinion, but come on now...if you don't like something, don't tell another they are stupid because they do. The original question was, "Anyone like this stuff enough to have a preference?" If you don't "like this stuff", you should have just left the thread.

A supergroup would imply that the band consists of various members who were once or are currently part of an established group or solo stars in their own right. Chicago, Toto, Foreigner and Yes don't qualify as suchl. The Traveling Wilburys or Velvet Revolver, for example, would be considered a supergroup.

And for the record early Chicago does kick ass. "Make Me Smile" being a prime example, although the Cetera-centric 80's era of Chicago did help me out in some cozy romantic situations here and there. [;)]

Hmm to me.. a real supergroup in the sense of this thread anyway seem to be bands maybe more on the pop-rock side of the fence with world-wide multiple albums, multiple hits - playing big production-value type stadium shows.... ??

so maybe I categorized Toto & Chicago as supergroups incorrectly, whatever, it's all about the music anyway. I always thought they were considered as such

I guess Power Station would be a supergroup according to definition

Agreed, Power Station is a good example of the classic use of the term.

"Supergroup" was a pretty commonly used term on rock radio in the late 70s/early 80s. One of the more popular supergroups was Asia. That was kind of an interesting supergroup concept, in that it combined three 70s prog rockers with one new waver (Geoff from the Buggles).
