Depeche Mode Black Celebration kept me down through 1986.
There are too many songs by the Smiths to list.

I don't own, nor have I listened to any of these Cure
albums more than once but Faith, Pornography and 1989's
Disintegration, are the most obvious.

I'd echo Cure's [i]Disintegration[/i] (even though I love it).

Joy Division. Love their material sooo much, but it's super depressing musically and lyrically.

Anyway, going with the Japanese theme here, I'll go with... "So Long, My Love" from the cartoon miniseries, [i]Area 88[/i]. Weird way to end the series with this song.

Now, on a more traditional sense, I'd go with Christian Death (featuring Rozz Williams). The album [i]Catastrophe Ballet[/i] had some really depressing songs, but they were great. Check out "The Drowning":
