'99 Red Balloons' Video to Air for an Hour 1 hour, 22 minutes ago



NEW YORK - They're kidding, right?

VH1 Classic will present a full hour of the English and German music videos for the 1984 hit "99 Luftballons," aka "99 Red Balloons," by German rock group Nena.

The music video presentation, to air Sunday (2 p.m. EST), caps off the cable channel's "Pay to Play for Hurricane Katrina Relief," which raised over $200,000 for Mercy Corps, a humanitarian relief organization.

Viewers could request one video to be played on VH1 Classic for every $25 donation. For a $35,000 donation, they could select an hour's worth of music videos from the 1960s through the early 1990s.

However, one viewer chose something different for his allotted hour, requesting continuous playing of "99 Luftballons," said VH1 spokeswoman Maura Wozniak.

"99 Luftballons" is a Cold-War era protest song that tells the story of 99 red balloons floating into the air, triggering an apocalypse when the military sends planes to intercept them.

99 red balloons is a great song...i don't think many people get the meaning behind it though. which is a pity, but the people who used to come into the 80's bar where i once worked loved it!

What the hell is this ... someone really needs help, personally I think this is just VH1 Classic doing this because nobody in there right mind would pay $35,000 for a full hour of "99 Luftballoons" by Nena. It's very possible Classicteam has something to do with this, and trust me being a strong VH1C viewer for the last 3+ years you come to these kind of conclusions.

It does smell that way, 35g's worth of exposure for Vh-1. Not too bad for all the press they are getting on this. Too bad we have become this jaded to think this but it could be true.

This all makes sense now. I was at my mom's place on Sunday watching her cable tv. I flipped on VH1 Classics and saw the Deutsche version. Then the US version came on so I watched it. Then the German version came on again and I watched it a second time because I still liek the song. Then the US version came on again and I switched the channel, thinking somoene at VH1 fell asleep at the control board.

Does it say anywhere that he paid $35,000? If I recall right you could get an hour of videos for about a $1000. The $35000 was for the videos plus a hand painted picture. Vh1 Classic is almost unwatchable now due to the lack of fresh video adds. They need all the publicity they can get.

Whether its $ 35k or $ 1k, one good thing that comes out of these things is that a few of the young 'uns take notice of great 80s music (okay, maybe not so great). If there are more of them, then we'll probably see the day when talentless rappers and hip-hop so called artists do not dominate music channels.

I heard about this on the radio Friday and I happened to have VH1 classics on when it started. My understanding is the donation was $35,000.00 for one hour of videos of your choice. I don't know what the reasoning was for the 99 luftballoons hour. At least they changed off from the English version to the German version each time the video ended.

If I had the money, I'd pay for an hour of Joy Division's LWTUA in a row and then for an hour of The Cure's "The hanging garden".

I don't have VH1, I watch it rarely when I go to my grandma's house. Hey, in one of those stays I discovered Information Society now that I recall it.

The Hanging Garden is your favorite Cure video? Wow--I do love the way Simon Gallup plays his bass without a strap at his knees. I've seen the Cure live many times and for some reason this has always turned me on---but never more evident than in The Hanging Garden video--Simon Gallup at his best--the way he drops his bass down to the graveyard ground=Ugh! It turns me on! (I raised you well my great daughter.[;)]) I would cheat on your dad with Simon Gallup in a heartbeat![:D] (by the way I am a bass player as well...)
