Two-part Songs?

Postby Frau_Blucher » Thu Jul 22, 2004 10:51 am

The other interesting article in the August Spin (see "50 Greatest Frontmen") was a bemoaning of the lack of two-part songs, ala Clapton's "Layla". I thought I was being clever by immediatley thinking of Franz Ferdinand's "Take Me Out", until he mentioned it three paragraphs down...not clever after all, just obvious [B)]

But how about two-part new wave songs? Here's a few I though of. Any others? Not just big long remixes but two pretty distinct sounds/songs in one. Even "White Wedding" parts I and II don't really qualify IMHO.

The Damned – Smash It Up (cool intro)
Split Enz – Six Months in a Leaky Boat (cool outro)
Kings – The Beat Goes On (Switching to Glide)
Soft Cell – Tainted Love-Where Did Our Go
Jon & Vangelis – The Friends of Mr Cairo (the full version)

Some maybe's...

The Church – Chaos
Kim Wilde – Cambodia & Reprise (which FritzB's just reintroduced us to)

You guys are too good.

Schwenko-san, I was thinking Television but "Marquee Moon" since it's so long...but it's just long and not a 2-parter. I didn't even think about "Little Johny Jewel." Are you thinking of the extended Temptation? That crossed my m

Human League have two off of _Reproduction_: "Morale/You've Lost that Loving Feeling" and "Austerity/Girl One." Also, the four parts of "Dignity of LAbour" from that EP.

Front 242 have "Masterhit" parts I, II, and III on the 12" single.

The 7" and 12" of "Temptation" were two different, distinct recordings. The 7" is tighter, and in my opinion, far superior. It also has never been released on CD! (The closest you get is the Something Wild soundtrack, which has an edited version of the

Here are some more 2-parters or songs that flow together so as to be virtually inseparable:
Big Audio Dynamite - The Bottom Line (Parts 1 & 2) (UK 12" Version)
David Bowie - Station to Station
Kraftwerk - Numbers/Computer World 2
Fashion - Bike Boys (

A wonderful 3-part song for any power-pop fan out there is "Three Times", next to last song on the Shoes' 'Present Tense' lp.

Man, I love those guys.....

Would "Money-Go-Round (Parts I & II)" by the Style Council qualify? Or "Wednesday Week" by Elvis Costello? Or even Human League's covers of "Rock 'n' Roll/ Nightclubbin'?"
