Any "Good" new Synthpop?

Not new, But I just resent discovered Wolfsheim from soulseek. They been around for years, and yet I never heard of them until now. Thanks again to those American Corporate Radio Station only playing same old crap years in and years out.

But the name Casio rythms does sound like and cool retro 80 synthpop band though.

I don't know if you would consider it synth-pop, but I just saw a video for Franz Ferdinand - Do you want to -- I thought it sounded great and reminded me of the 80's.

My current favourite synthpop band is Rupesh Cartel. They are a cross between Echo Image and Apoptygma Berzerk but have a sound all on their own. Great melodic sense and extremely catchy songs. Check it out. Their album is called "Mainland".

Speaking of Apoptygma, their new cd single comes out this next week I believe. Should be interesting.

Neuroactive has also just released their new album. I have never been disappointed by any Neuroactive album so this one should be no different. One thing to mention is that their lead singer is not singing on this album. There are guest singers on all of the songs. That worries me slightly.

The new DM song sounds great and rumor has it that their new album will sound like a cross between Ultra and Violator, leaning a little more towards Violator. I'm excited!!!

Camouflage is also rumored to be releasing a new album by year's end.

The problem I've found with most synthpop in the mid-90's to early 00's is this reliance on ripping off Dave Gahan's vocal style but making it even more effected which reeks of "I've always been a huge DM fan and I wanna sing just like Dave!" It sounds like Hi-NRG more often than not (which I could do without). Cosmicity, on the other hand is just flat-out wimpy & harmless (just my opinion). This was based soley on my expierience w/ a few albums I bought from A Different Drum, but I'm sure there are acts more to my liking out there. I just haven't found them yet...

Here are some suggestions:

The Postal Service's "Give Up" was a decent synthpop album.

It's not new, but you probably haven't heard it--"Holiday" by Magnetic Fields is pretty good. Came out in '96 but sounds as fresh any synth-based indie pop out there.

Laptop--the guy has some pretty humerous singles "I'm Not the Reason" & "I'm So Happy You Failed."

Honestly, that's about all that I could recommend based one what you're looking for. I like Ladytron but they define "aloof." Very stiff as are most younger synth-based/electro-clash acts on college radio these days. They're rather kitschy, I guess, which is the trend.

I agree, the unoriginal vocal style of a good number of the bands leaves me high and dry. I've found some really good female-fronted bands like Freezepop, Riviera F, and Client. I ordered a few discs from A Different Drum and along with my order I was sent a promo cd sampler. Alot of the music was really good, fun, and catchy, but the vocals were just SO affected that I had a hard time listening to it.

Freezepop does some pretty good kitschy synthpop. I recommend "Freezepop Forever."

Future Bible Heroes features Stephin Merritt and Claudia Gonson of The Magnetic Fields, as well as Christopher Ewen from Figures On A Beach. Great stuff. I highly recommend "Memories Of Love," one of my favorite albums ever.

Joy Electric is a Christian band that uses Moog synths exclusively. Check out "Robot Rock."

And of course there's always The Rentals.

Actually, that one came out in '94. It is indeed fantastic, though.

Quite liked White Town's second album, a nice line in synthpop which follows the pattern of their number one hit, "Your Woman".
