By now we are all familiar with the TOP 106.7 countdown that KROQ did every new-year during the 1980's. If this is news to you then please see Earl Howard's site at: http://earlhoward.com/kroq.htm

This list was compiled sometime in December (from what I have been told) by the powers that be at KROQ and as a result has an end of the year bias built into it because many perfectly fine songs that came and went early in the year were left off the list completely.

What I would like to do is fill out and extend that list to encompass EVERYTHING KROQ played more than a few times but most fans completely forgot about a few months later and were consequently left off the list.

If you could, can you please include the name of the band or artist and the name of the song but also what album it appeared on (or EP or B-side single).

There was a lot of really good music that KROQ played that did not make the list.
Let's correct it now while we can still remember what they were, because with me, my memory is starting to fade and if it were not for some of the songs of the week and other things that jar my memory around here, those memories would be gone forever.

Noble cause Jimbo! I too would like to see a list of every song that made the KROQ playlist, but I have yet to digest (locate and rip) the songs that did make the lists. Aren't you the guy that has an MP3 of every song on all the countdowns? No wonder you are looking for more tunes.

I remember songs in terms of the albums that I had and what songs were played on KROQ and what songs weren't. For example, only three songs from the Go-Go's Beauty and the Beat didn't get airplay (Automatic, You Can't Walk In Your Sleep, and Skidmarks on My Heart).

Here's some off the top of my head:

Teenage Girls - Surf punks - My Beach (I loved this tune and it got way more airplay than "My Wave" which did make the countdown, of course due to it's less than PC subject matter, it hasn't been played in 20 years).

Say When - Lene Lovich - Stateless - 05 (This got some airplay in late 1979/early 1980 but fell off the playlist when Lucky Number took off.)

Trains Vs Planes - Human Hands (Quirky new wave at it's finest. Got plenty of airplay in late '79 and early 1980, but it could have been released in '78) Finally got the 7" a couple of years ago, but I have yet to rip it to MP3.)

Actually, I have every song on the countdown but two.

I put them all up on soul seek a while ago and posted how to find them but the thread sank and died from lack of interest. [xx(]

Just in 1980 alone, there were egregious ommisions, so I say again, don't take this list as bible. 1980 as an example, cross-checking 1981 for releases that leaked into that year, these :

From what I remember, there was at least a year delay (sometimes more) for these release dates and when you started hearing them on KROQ. That was especially true with almost all of the UK acts. I know I was hearing New Order songs like "Age of Consent" and "Blue Monday" while I was also hearing "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division for the first time.

If anybody wants more from 80', or 79', 81'-82', let me know. I have my KROQ songs listed by year, and I'm in the process of making minidisc compilations by year for KROQ music. They are all non countdown songs (I have all of the countdown songs, except for that damn Boy Waiting song from 84' [:(!][:(!][:(!]). This is a cool thread, I hope people can add to it so we all can rediscover those gems that may have slipped our mind. Peace.

Here's a question for you old (ish) KROQ fans-did KROQ play any of Paisley Underground bands? I looked at the countdown lists and noticed only one by the Three O'Clok and some Bangles stuff-what about Rain Parade? Naked Prey? Dream Syndicate?

Did Rodney B ever play them?

I remember the Dream Syndicate being played in regular rotation.
I don't remember the other bands ever being played except by maybe Rodney.
Maybe someone else remembers them being played.

The Three O'Clock made the list but for only a few month period and really was not played much after when it first came out.
