Basically any rock from 64-93. After Nirvana hit the scene the creativity in rock went in the toilet--not completly but pretty damn near close. Only recently does it seem to be on the slight upswing.

Randy,
I think the problem everyone has with Nirvana are the legions of copycat bands that clogged commercial radio after they hit the scene. Every label was searching for the "next Nirvana". You did'nt find much creativity on commercial radio or MTV aft

This doesn't quite respond to the "rock genres" aspect of the question . . . but I am a huge opera fan! I have subscriptions to three different companies.

A couple of years ago NPR did a story on the overlap between punk fans and opera fans. Who knew

My favorite off that album was his take on "Carmen". The album's definitely worth checking out, but then, I was always a sucker for albums with themes behind them.

Besides new wave, I'm into a lot of new indie rock and electronica (and sometimes they merge together so beautifully as exhibited by such great acts like The Postal Service, The Rapture, and others). And I like [i]some[/i] modern synthpop and ambient. 8

Old punk rock ie 76-84, old Delta Blues, country from the late 60's, early 70's, reggae, new electro-dub, string quartets, basically anything that has soul and isn't forced.
