The question wasn't best albums you can't get on CD, but best bands, either whose entire catalog is out of print or never released. I see I was mistaken on Blancmange, A Certain Ratio, and the Abecedarians. 20/20 releassed a CD in 1995 which you can still get so I guess they're out too.

Agreed that its sad not to be able to get Suburban Lawns, Slow Children, and 20/20 especially. I did pick up the 20/20 and Look Out double album CD too and am suprised it went out of print already. There are however very nice VBR rips available on the hub. Ditto for Suburban Lawns, Human Sexual Response (I forget from who), Slow Children courtesy of Grunch (along with other amazing rips), etc. Your best bet with ACR might be their "Early" 2CD set.

What would stop someone to find out which of these "missing" albums are in the public domain, right-wise, and then releasing them theirselves? Great music (hell, all music, good or bad) should be preserved for posterity.

Since we're talking about albums recorded in the 70s and beyond, none of these albums are public domain, at least in the US, unless the copyright holders have specifically released them. (Not much chance of that.) There's lots of good info at http://www.pdinfo.com/ . Check out the FAQ.

I have to add a 3rd category if I may--stuff released on cd but in remix version.

I would love the original versions of the early Shriekback albums but as far as I know they've never been released. I wish they would stop remixing it's even more annoying than Moby can be with that. (and I like Moby, but I really only need 499 versions of "South Side" not the 500 he remixed...)
