Obviously I'm in the minority but when my friends and I got into punk and new wave, we weren't called or thought of as gay for our type of music. It was all about the punkers and new wavers vs. the "mainstream" rockers. Then again this was the late 70's and we were listening to XTC, Gang Of Four, The Clash, The Brains, The Normal, Generation X, The Ramones, The Silicon Teens, The Undertones, The Stranglers, etc. Was this a trend that started in the 80's? Because I can see how bands like Erasure and The Pet Shop Boys might have had that association; we were just trying to get the jocks and conservative types to be more open to our music, and were only offended by their conformity and them thinking our choice in music was "weird" compared to the REO Speedwagons and Journeys of the world.
