Can't pick one particular part of The Smith's - Paint a Vulgar Picture. So I'll just say the whole song.

and this one:

Some people might get some pleasure out of hate
Me, I've enough already on my plate
People might need some tension to relax
Me?, I'm too busy dodging between the flak

What you see is what you get
You've made your bed, you better lie in it
You choose your leaders and place your trust
As their lies wash you down and their promises rust
You'll see kidney machines replaced by rockets and guns

The Jam - Going Underground

and this one too:

Passing by a cemetery,
I think of all the little hopes and dreams,
That lie lifeless and unfilled beneath the soil.
I see an old man fingering his perishing flesh.
He tells himself he was a good man and did good things.
Amused and confused by life's little ironies,
He swallows his bottle of distilled damnation.

The The - Perfect

There are some of the many fave lines I have:

"Phoney Beatlemania has bitten the dust!"
The Clash - London Calling

"A.M., the F.M. the P.M. too
Churning out that boogaloo"
The Clash - The Magnificent Seven

"Call me immature
Call me a poser
I'd love to spread manure in your bed of roses"
The Specials -Too Much Too Young

"Whatever happened to Leon Trotsky?
He got an ice pick
That made his ears burn"
The Stranglers - No More Heros

"Lights going out and a kick in the balls
That's entertainment"
The Jam - That's Entertainment

One that Blir pointed out from his review of From The Jam concert:

"Ghost of a steam train - echoes down my track
It's at the moment bound for nowhere -
just going round and round, Ohh"
The Jam - Town Called Malice

This one is the most haugting to me, and I got the chills when The Jam performed it on The Gify Tour, and agin when From The Jam performed it:

"How do you feel at the end of the day
Just like you've walked over your own grave"
The Jam - Ghosts

OK, now my Modness is showing by the lines I picked... I've got a few more one-liners, just gotta think about 'em--it's late. There's one from Gang of Four I like, will have to sleep on it.

He dug a hole in the ground
When no one was looking
It took him years to be found

Here-here! I almost quoted something from Bitterest Pill, That's Entertainment or Carnation. Weller seems to have a knack for capturing that hopeful hopelessness...or is it hopeless hopefulness?

"You see there's this girl I just can't keep from
And hungry lie in wait for her shadow to cross the window frame
Light upon the venetian blind ...
Hoping for just one good claim upon an ectoplasmic stain"

I been waiting in the supermarket standing in line with the beans (Cash up).
I been waiting at the post office for sticky pictures of the queen (Stick up).
Now I'm waiting for you to get yourself good and ready
(Make up).
Thinking to myself "is this what they mean by going steady?
(Break up).

(Buzzcocks - "Time's Up")

A smash of glass and a rumble of boots.
An electric train and a ripped up phone booth.
Paint splattered walls and the cry of a tomcat.
Lights going out and a kick in the balls.
I say that's entertainment.

(The Jam - "That's Entertainment")

Belligerent ghouls run Manchester schools.
Spineless swines, cemented minds.
Sir leads the troops
Jealous of youth
Same old suit since 1962
He does the military two step down the nape of my neck.

(The Smiths - "The Headmaster Ritual")

Squeezed me out of your life
Down the drain like molten toothpaste
I feel used and spat out

Split Enz ~ I See Red

That all the while my mouth was saying "Go"
My heart was screaming "No" "No" "No"
Turn around and look at me
You'll find me on my knees
Saying "Please" "Please"

General Public ~ Never You Done That

I wish I was in Tijuana
Eating barbequed iguana

Forgot these two from DM - Get The Balance Right:

Theres more besides joyrides
Little house in the countryside
Understand, learn to demand,
Compromise, sometimes lie

Be responsible, respectable,
Stable but gullible
Concerned and caring, help the helpless
But always remain ultimately selfish

"Well... you didn't wake up this morning
cause you didn't go to bed.
You were watching the whites of your eyes turn red"

The The, This is the Day.

You guys took some of my favorite Jam lines. [:)]

Every line from the Clash's "The Magnificent Seven" is great.

You know, Marie...I almost added a set of lines from The Magnificent Seven myself. Hard to pick a favorite set, though. There are so many on this song!

From "Open" by The Cure:

"i can't take it anymore
this it i've become
this is it like i get
when my life's going numb
i just keep moving my mouth
i just keep moving my feet
i say i'm loving you to death
like i'm losing my breath
and all the smiles that i wear
and all the games that i play
and all the drinks that i mix
and i drink until i'm sick
and all the faces that i make
and all the shapes that i throw
and all the people i meet
and all the words that i know
makes me sick to the heart
oh i feel so tired...

and the way the rain comes down hard
that's how i feel inside..."
