Wow, I can't let this one slide. The lyrics aren't random drivel. Hong Kong Garden was inspired after Siouxsie witnessed racist thugs terrorizing the owner of a local Chinese take out restaurant. Christine is about Christine Sizemore, a woman with a split personality disorder. And a lot of people (including me) think Dear Prudence is even BETTER than the original.

Too clever for their own good then in my view. Without the background, Hong Kong Garden has always made me think Siouxsie is a racist bitch. Recent money grabs like singing on a Basement Jaxx song a couple of years ago add to my disrespect.

Bronski Beat - I love "Smalltown Boy", but haven't really latched onto anything else they released. Can't stand "Why"

China Crisis - I've heard so many good things about them over the years, and in listening to their music, can tell that they're unique and talented, but none of their songs really 'stick'.

Laurie Anderson - I heard "O Superman", and was done. I watched Home Of The Brave, but can't remember much of it, except Pete Gabriel singing "Excellent Birds", and Adrian Belew was in it.

Aztec Camera - "Oblivious" is ok, but really, what else do they have? The cover of VH's "Jump"?

Tin Tin Duffy - "Kiss Me", that's all I have to say. Guh!

Haysi Fantayzee - I heard "Shiny Shiny" and wrote them off immediately.

Icicle Works - "Whisper.." is a cool song, but I really didn't bother with them after that song.

Nik Kershaw - "Wouldn't It Be Good", while decent, was a little too poppy for me to have any interest in exploring his catalogue.

The Jam - Just not my thing

Level 42 - I grabbed their '81 album off the NWO Hub years ago, and I just never got in the mood for Al Jarreau-meets-Steely Dan.

It's crazy to see some of the bands people don't like here. Siouxsie? Shocking, esp. pointing out "Spellbound", which is just an incredible song. Simple Minds? Boingo? Jaw-dropping in my world! Still, great topic, Minty. No one has mentioned The Fixx yet, that's good (now I've done it).

[/quote]Probably 99% of the bands you listen to espouse hippie politics, they just don't wear it on their sleeves like the Oils do. FWIW, their album 10, 9, 8... absolutely shreds and was a great example of powerful, politically driven music. I wish the Oils would come back and rant & rave again to the masses. Please, fer chrissakes, bring back the hippies instead of the corporate rock bullsh** that dominates today.

The Stone Roses. Hippy-drippy extacy-fueled garbage. I actually listened to "Fools Gold" all the way through...quite possibly the worst spent ten minutes of my life.

And I'll throw in the whole Bauhaus/Love And Rockets/Tones On Tail/Peter Murphy/Daniel Ash amalgam while I'm at it. When the best you can do are Bowie and Temptations covers, you got serious problems.

The Smiths would have been a decent instrumental group. Unfortunately, they decided they needed vocals and lyrics. Disastrously, the vocalist and lyricist they decided to go with was Morrissey. With that said, I thought one of their non-instrumental tracks was pretty terrific, "Stop Me If You Think That You've Heard This One Before." But it goes without saying it would have been more terrific if it were instrumental.

I don't care how influential they were, Joy Division were virtually worthless save for "Love Will Tear Us Apart." Even that had shoddy lyrics and terminally-off instrument playing. (The drummer seemed to be playing in some different time than the rest of the band.)

Husker Du had exactly one good song, "Don't Want to Know If You Are Lonely." Even still, that's one more good song than The Birthday Party had.

Come to think of it, I don't think I could ever get into anything on the SST label, with the exception of one track by fIREHOSE (or however you capitalized their name). I'm just not into sloppy, feedback-distorted music, I guess.

They have put out 5 or 6 records, and none of them has more than two or three strong songs. The studio production on the first three sound quite dated today. The best way to get into them is to see them live, but it's probably too late for that. There are a couple of live discs and a live DVD available, but I haven't heard/seen those so I can't vouch for them.

As for 'I Just Can't Stop It', believe me i tried. It's all I've got by them (being called an 'essential ska album' by critics), and I just don't get the hype. I have a soft spot for "Mirror in the Bathroom" (even though it's not that great of a song), and I just love 'Best Friend' with its infectious beat. Unfortunately the rest of the tracks all sound the same to me and by around the fifth track the vocals begin to jar. [V]

tenohtwo, The Jam rock! You just need to look beyond "Town Called Malice" (overplayed), "That's Entertainment" (boring), and "Going Underground" (overrated). Oh and The Fixx IMO were a great singles band, their albums were hit and miss. But they had so many singles and they were all so good (I don't recall they released a single bad one during the 80's), that I forgive them for their album inconsistencies. [;)]

zill, Siouxsie may have awful lyrics but musically the Banshees kick ass! Severin on bass and Budgie on drums are a perfect combination and their both brilliant!

oh, and for all you PSB haters out there, let me make one thing clear: <FONT SIZE=14>PET SHOP BOYS ([b]NOT "THE" PET SHOP BOYS</B>) ARE FANTASTIC.</FONT SIZE=14> They may have come a little late onto the scene, but listen to their "Please", "Actually", and "Behaviour" albums and tell me their music isn't great! They mix the avant-garde elements of Japan's music with Duran Duran's pop sensibilities to make an awesome hybrid!
