I have to disagree. Not #1 on my list of songs by The Smiths but it's up there.
I think just about everything by Eurythmics was overrated. Just never got into them. General Public is another band whose songs, in my opinion, were pretty overrated. That, however, might just my continued bitterness over what The beat could still have produced if not for the defection of Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger.
Okay...here's where I get hammered. Duran Duran had a ton of overrated songs after Rio. The Reflex, Union Of The Snake and Notorious come to mind immediately. Don't get me wrong, I didn't hate everything released by them after 1982. I happen to like A View To A Kill.

OK, I finally thought of one.
Modern English's "I'll Melt With You".
It's not that great of a song to begin with. It's OK, but overplayed. The fact that it gets put on EVERY "new wave compilation" out there, and is always played when advertisers feel the need to pull our 80s nostalgia chain, makes it overrated in my book.

OMD's Joan of Arc can't be overrated because it's too obscure and only hardcore fans of new wave or OMD know of this song. Additionally I completely disagree with you Minty about this song, it's one of the most beautiful songs in all of the new wave genre. It's powerful, intense, thoughtful, dramatic and stately.

I wasn't aware that the song was one of note, so I don't see how it could have been overrated. It's more of a curiosity than anything ground breaking. Then again, you seemed to enjoy the Chris Cornell thing, so I've just wasted a couple of sentences, haven't I?

No hard feelings, 80, there's a reason I called it THE most overrated song ever. It's cause I think it's just horrific. How ANYONE with sensible taste in music could like it is beyond me. I beg you to tell me what is the appeal of that song.

Well, minty, like probably any song that you or anyone else likes, it's tough to describe the specific reasons why we like any song because the reason is simple...it touches us or it doesn't. It strikes a chord with us or it doesn't.
With this song, I like the way the music and vocals fit the theme of the song. It's atmospheric. It's a combination of goth, post punk (oh, what an overused label) and dub that I just plain and simply like.
It's a whole lot easier to describe the song than it is to describe why I or anyone else likes this, or any other song. It moves me. It's really that simple.
No one can convince someone to like a song through debate or description. We can only convince someone to open their mind up to the possibilities. You've listened to it, probably with an open mind, and don't like it. That's fine. I don't like the Chris Cornell version of Billie Jean. And that's fine too.
Does that make sense?

I think this message board is filled with open-minded people yet our favorite bands and playlists differ. That's okay.
