edit: I went with War for the haunting New Year's Day, the anthemic Sunday Bloody Sunday, the intense Seconds, the urgent Two Hearts Beat As One et. al. Definitely one of the most unforgettable eighties albums.

Also I think their song Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me off the Batman Forever soundtrack was their best song of the 90's. Anyone like that song?

Hmmm. I just realized that the only U2 record I own is War. I have the odd 45 and a handful of mp3s, but I was never moved to purchase any other album. I never actively disliked U2 but I also never really understood all the hype. I'm such a rebel.

It was a toss up between Boy and October for me. I went with Boy as it was my introduction to U2. I lost interest after Joshua Tree, it seemed to me that after that their ego was a big as the stadiums they filled.

Interesting about his lyrics being stolen, didn't know that, saw the 'October' tour, U2 was opening for J. Geiles Band...

Their 'Boy' tour was a sweat fest! My buddy and I were leaving 'Radio City' a night club on the corner of Knott and Ball Road in Anaheim, CA one Friday night after our 'Mod' club ended, and we saw the marque 5 doors down at Woodstock's, a little hole in the wall stall with a stage club advertising U2, so we went and bought the $10 tickets, and were thinking what a great score, since the place was fire rated for 255 people!

Well, the night of the gig, over 600 people were crammed into the place, we were all sweating, and then when U2 hit the stage, the place hit the fan...

People fainting, mostly females, but some guys, as the 'heat wave' swirled about the club. No air was on, and too many bodies dancin' up a storm, it was exhilirating and scary all at the same time!

U2 played all the songs they knew and then some, their finale encore was "I Will Follow" for the 3rd time, once in their set, and 2x as an encore set, back in the day when bands performed 2 to 3 songs as their encore...

All in all an historic gig (didn't know it at the time!), and the best $10 I ever spent, after that I only saw U2 in large arenas.

As a side note on the 'October' tour, J. Geiles fans didn't know what to make of these Irish boys, who would soon dwarf any of the 'rock' bands playing arenas across North America. Bono was out in the crowd, and chicks shunned away--I'm sure those same folks were in the crowd for the 'War' tour, singing along... [:)]

To add to my earlier post, Unforgetttable Fire is a close second to October for me. The combo of unique songs with Eno's slightly off-kilter production gives the album a sound all it's own that I've never heard on any other record, U2 or otherwise.

Glokstadt, thanks for the concert review of Boy; it sounds kind of like the show at the now defunct Astor Park club in Seattle that I remember reading about. Regarding the October tour with J. Geils, I am quite sure that's the only time they've ever been an opening act. I didn't catch them until War, right about the time of the Red Rocks show.

For me it has to be Joshua Tree. Some of their greatest songs on that album.
