Elvis Costello a HUNK???
Actually, I got into Elvis (and new wave in general) in 1979 after mistakingly hearing I looked like him!
I was 12 years old, a "Newsday" paperboy with a bleached-blonde bowl haircut and rose colored sunglasses, and into the standard rock stuff (Led Zep, Who, AC/DC) every 12 year old was into at the time. One summer day, at a house where the customer wanted the paper inside the back door, I stumbled across two sunbathing HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS IN BIKINIS!
As I stopped awkwardly and gave the befuddled look a 12 year old guy who just started noticing girls gives to two HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS IN BIKINIS, I noticed they were playing the New York's old WPIX-FM on the radio, and one of them says to the other "He's cute. Kind of like (that guy in) Elvis Costello."
Now, I only heard the "cute like Elvis Costello" part, so I rushed out to buy "This Year's Model" to hear what my doppelgänger sounded like. Upon finding the album, I thought I look nothing like that dork, but bought it nonetheless. It was when I got home and opened it up that I realized they meant Bruce Thomas the bass player, but the album was great and got me going on my "New Wave Phase." Thanks to those two high school girls!
