Crowded House always comes to mind in relation to this subject. I have read more than once that they were one of those unfortunate bands that hit a home run with their first album and could never quite replicate the quality.

Also, Crowded House being a somewhat reconstituted Split Enz, it makes their first record less of a natural debut. It's like saying General Public's first LP is a great debut, which is complicated by the fact that they are a subset of the English Beat, which put out a short stack of excellent records (of which their first is truly a notable and worthy pick).
