Any LA/Orange County New Wave Clubgoers?

Hi everyone. I grew up in the valley- the west end. We had PHASES out our way back in the day. I think it was an 'off-shoot' of Hollywood's ODYSSEY... lots of (hazy, sordid/splendid) memories... Fenders and The Scream too. I remember going to 2 locations for Scream downtown- The Park Plaza Hotel and somewhere on Grand Ave. I broke my wrist trying to sneak in, jumping through a transom window at the Grand Ave location I think! I'd heard Fenders burned down in the early 90's... Phases was closed in '85 I think, and became a Toes Tavern (!) Have to take a car trip one of these days and see if I can remember where all these places were- and what they look today... The Plimsouls live scenes in Valley Girl were filmed at THE CENTRAL, on Sunset in Hollywood. Now The Viper Room... if you watch closely, you can see the old Central sign on the wall... FM STATION was in the valley, at Lankershim and Victory I think... Wow- haven't heard that place mentioned in a million years! It was 'rocker' joint I recall! CLUB 88 became a place called "the Radio", for awhile... I'm drifting down nostalgia lane! This is such a cool website...

The shows at all these clubs were varied in style. None of them played just one style.

FM Station was owned by Filthy McNasty who also owned a club on Sunset bearing his name. It is on the same block as the Viper Room. I'm trying to remember if it was his club that became the Central.

They all bring back memories. I remember Spinal Tap opening for us to get some stage experience at the Central. Talk about a mixed bill! I have a tape of it!

I remember some woman who booked for FM Station calling and saying that we had to play free for Filthy's birthday or we wouldn't be booked there anymore. If I had a nickle for everytime we heard something like that from bookers...

Wayne Barlowe at Club 88 was a great guy and supporter of local music. Every year he would have a series of nights where all of the proceeds would go to the Jerry Lewis telethon. I recently came across some tickets from some of the shows that I did for that effort.

I used to hang out at a club in Santa Ana called Nightscape. There was also the 321 club..

I also went to one called "phases" but i cant remember where that one was. And who could forget "studio K" and cloud 9 at knotts berry farm lol.

LOL, Studio K. I think a few of us talked about that before too! Hilarious. And man, I KNOW I went to 321 as well. Where was it exactly and can you describe it a bit? It's escaping me.

321 was that club in Santa Monica on Santa Monica Blvd named for it's street address. I only went there once, but I remember it as packed to the gills with a huge line to get in.

In 1983, I was only 13 years old and couldn't go to any clubs, but there was one place in Pasadena off of Lake st. called "Marilyns the Backstreet". It was an under 21 club that served soda to a bunch of kids who came in drunk. They played New wave on Fridays. It was a pretty good time!
