I've been wanting to bring up this topic for some time now. I agree with the idea that these bands should stick to what made them popular. The stuff they put out 10-15-20 years later is nothing short of garbage.

Now lets thing of something new - Which bands do you feel did a lousy job of evolving, as opposed to just plain selling out...

I'll give you one to start - Bananrama...

Your comment about releases 1-15-20 years later is so off base, and close minded to say the least. One listen to the latest TFF, or for that matter the 1995 release by 10cc (I know, not new wave but 20 good years after their first stuff at least). The 1995 10cc release Mirror Mirror is nothing short of brilliant, intelligent, lush pop. These guys wrote almost perfect songs. You cannot possibly generalize to say all these bands put out garbage. To each his own, but I must say respectfully you are maintaining an awfully closed mind to think this across the board.

Look even further back into the late 60s and early 70s at such music masters as Caravan and Barclay James Harvest. Over the years, they evolved musically, but they have so much talent they continue to this day to amaze you with brilliat music. You are truly missing out to not keep an open mind and allow your ears and soul the experience og one of these groups, even with their latest releases. IMO, very very very few bands/artists these days could stand next to these musical geniuses with respect to melodies, songwriting, instrument interplay, etc.....opne up, and let them take you on a music journey into lush pop perfection.

Oh, incidentally, I think the best "comeback" album all of all time was "Trade Test Transmission" by the Buzzcocks. It's like they were never gone!

Two bands come to mind to me that I think put out pretty good releases way later on.The Dictators-D.F.F.D and the Dogs-Suburban Nightmare.I agree with the Buzzcocks-Trade test,but I think they put out a bit of crap after that.

I guess I'm in the minority here...I think all bands are pretty much hit and miss, and while I haven't been thrilled about every single album by post-new wavers, I really liked Duran's "Astronaut," as well as the latest by Billy Idol and TFF.

Speaking of the Buzzcocks, their latest self titled CD is pretty damned good too. And TSOL & CH3 came out with really good reunion discs not too long ago as well.

I think it's hilarious that "Astronaut" is getting Duran Duran some of the best reviews of their career. Remember, [i]Rio[/i] was panned when it debut in many music magazines.

Almost forgot, Killing Joke's latest comeback CD was awesome! Don't know if they count or not, because they never really seem to break up, just take a few years off here & there. Glad they're back though.

sadly, there are many poor lost souls here who are forever mired in the past. one hopes that they can let go of their neon fishnet tops or parachute pants and checkered vans, and venture out into the present day... of course, if they did, they'd find the kids wearing, well, all the things i just listed.

Last night a 1997 Echo & the Bunnymen track, "I Want to Be There" popped up on my random play. What a great song with a timeless sound. If you didn't know any better, it could easily fit into 1987, 1997 or 2007!

Agreed! I don't know if it qualifies as a comeback or not, but it certainly is solid work. So solid it feels like their 1990s discography didn't even exist! (In my opinion, they kinda started going downhill after what's THIS for… but maybe I just need to give their industrially influenced era a revisit.

I agree, but I think that album sort of makes the point others have about what works and what doesn't with respect to these so-called comebacks...A song like "Krafty" very much is in the heart and style of some of NO's best stuff. On the other hand, Tears For Fears, one of my favorite all time 80s bands, lost me way back in '89 with their we-want-to-be-Beatles-but-we're-not-as-good "Seeds of Love," although their early '90s "Laid So Low" was pretty darn good.

I say, artists should (obviously) do what they want and not feel forced to conform to a certain sound, but they do so at the expense of collecting dust on the bargin bins.
