Are you excluding his Tin Machine detour? That stuff makes me heave bile! He says he wanted to get back into a band and play small venues. Well he sold out Dodger Stadium and others around the country to play this crap and not a single one of his hits. He's dead to me unless I get my long-awaited refund! [:D]

The problem with Bowie is that he's no longer leading the way like he was in the 70's. From 1984's TONIGHT album up until 1997's EARTHLING he was following trends instead of setting them and it shows. That's a huge chunk of time in which to be mediocre and, as an artist, he's barely recovered (The excellent HOURS and HEATHEN albums).

There WERE good songs on the albums from 1984 through 1997 but nothing even approaching what was on HUNKY DORY or LOW. Luckily for Bowie he's been at it so long he's reached living legend status so his legacy is assured and all the mediocrity will eventually be forgotten.

I think LETS DANCE was the turning point. If he had only done that "swinging accountant on his night off" act for one album instead of trying in vain to duplicate that success over and over again in the 80's, he would've been much better off.

Je-ZUZZ, i LOVE Bowie.
Last night I pushed "repeat" on "Heroes" 4 times. Yeah!
Then, while playing "Ashes to Ashes" (!), my husband pointed out that the whole Major Tom thing was a metaphor for heroin. At first I was kind of doubtful, but then I thought about it some more, playing the song at least 2 more times, and thought maybe there could be something in that.

Gary Numan, of course. Out of over 300 songs, I can't think of more than five which I would describe as not liking.

a-ha also does not have a single bad album in their catalog, and not many bad songs either.

Also, I love pretty much everything Midge Ure has produced, despite changing genres a few times.

I just thought of poor ol' Robyn Hitchcock who continues to release records on indie labels only to see them go immediately out of print. In fact, you'd be hard-pressed to even find the Rhino Reissues of his pre-A&M stuff (and his A&M stuff? Forget it. Long out of print.)

This guy is truly amazing and the quality and quantity of his output is more consistent than most anybody else I can think who started up in 1977. He's the father of the late 80's "Paisley Underground" movement too.

I've really heard great things about the recent New Order CD. Now I need a job so I can go get it. I've always loved that band.

My husband seems compelled to buy Morrissey's solo work. The appeal totally alludes, me although I thought there were a few good cuts on "Vauxhall & I." However the CD he released last year "You Are the Quarry" turned out to be one of my favorites of last year. Really strong work from Moz. I think it's some best lyrics since writing for the Smiths and several songs are very politcal.
