synth-funk and its relation to new wave

I think every category in music has it's cross overs and yes some of these cross overs actually become a long term sub category. How would you class Fingerprintz-Beat Escape ?

Early Prince (Dirty Mind, Controversy) is indeed a good example. Prince himself has rediscovered his early sound judging by his most recent work.

Ha! I forgot all about this post. Don't feel bad, budaniel, I've spent a small fortune hunting down albums recommended by some or other hooligan on this site. Never regretted it, though ....so the kids go without lunch money for a few days - no big deal. [8D]

It's amazing how after recording their final disco track of the 70s, 1979's "Ready for the 80s", the Village People went on to make a movie and record 3 more terrible albums that proved that they definitely were NOT.

Just an observation, it seems white artists in the 80's were a lot funkier than today... or maybe it just seems that way with bands like Nu Shooz, Level 42....

I also read that artists like Peter Brown, Dan Hartman, Bobby Caldwell even tried to hide the fact that they were white, so that black R&B audiences would accept them.

How about 80's (Latin) Freestyle? Anyone here like it? Johnny O, Stevie B, Shannon? Pet Shop Boys and Information Society had some good freestyle-type of tracks. Paul Robb even produced an album for freestyle singer Noel [:)]

I was going to post a topic on new wave funk and discovered this thread! I learned much from the responses. Some of you guys have doctoral level knowledge of the genre!

I am fooling around with a new wave mix for a party. I'm defining "new wave" as broadly as possible. I want a few songs with funky beats (emphasis on the "one" beat, snaky bass line, percussive Fender chunky guitar), even if not pure funk. I came up with a few:

* Kiss/Erotic City by Prince
* Girlfriend Is Better by Talking Heads
* The Magnificent Seven by The Clash (stretch)
* Hyperactive by Thomas Dolby
* Fashion by David Bowie
* Shoot You Down by APB
* Favourite Shirts by Haircut 100

I know it's all over the place, but that is what I LOVE about the genre: it's all over the place!

Anybody got suggestions?

I have CD's by all of these bands...except The Commodores. Also, I posted in this thread in 2005? Wow.

More of the Funk side of things, but InvisibleMan mentioned Starpoint, who were very good, and I also always loved Five Star as well.
