I'm thinking the lyrics at least are Andy's. He wrote much of Erasure's lyrics.

Hmmm.....I don't know. Honestly. Slightly different? I just have difficulty claiming any Smiths material is inferior to Morrissey's solo material. The Smiths are really seminal and very important in the history of music. I'd hate to downplay them with the Moz's ongoing work.

Me too. I hate to accept Morrissey went solo and left the Smiths. But, I also hate to admit his work as a solo is better. Haha.

The Queen Is Dead (of course by the Smiths) is one of the Best Albums of all time. The Smiths is an intergral part of the 80s British music.

That is why I can't accept that Morrissey is better than The Smiths. But I should. Haha. Life is really tough.

Morissey did some decent stuff after leaving The Smiths, but no way can it be called superior.

No mention yet of Brian Ferry's solo work. I think "Boys and Girls" is a nice continuation of the sexy sophisti-pop of "Avalon". I haven't heard much of his other stuff, but I'd like to.

I view Morrissey's solo work as a continuation of what he was doing in the Smiths as lyricist. Typical self aggrandizing, angst, melancholy, etc. plus big doses of autobiography as well as econo / socio / political commentary on English society. (Actually, now that he's been living in LA he's been starting with the US but whatever, that's just how he is.)

The music has gone a bit more towards rockabilly style in a general sense and the production has become increasingly more polished. These are stylistic differences but at the core of his talent pool, I'd say Morrissey's pretty much the same. Just older and thus more comfortable in his skin and at times (seemingly) able to parody himself. Granted, Morrissey's work (now especially) is just so tempered and he's so seasoned but the Smiths were just so important. The songs were simply extraordinary. I would probably bet my last dollar that there are more fans who can remember and sing along to Smiths albums than Morrisey albums song for song.

Plus I feel like any discussion about the Smiths cannot ignore Johnny Marr, the musical genius side of the band. It's almost hard to compare Morrissey to the Smiths because the Smiths were really him AND Marr and Marr is just in a class by himself. I don't know, I have difficulty with this. It's like that other age old debate: which is better, Joy Division or New Order?

Special note must be made regarding Martin Gore's Counterfeit work. Truly passionate music, self appeasing and thus a delicious glimpse into the mind and soul of another one of the most important lyricists to come out of the eighties and yes, another one still making relevant music today. I think it's great to see what inspires him and 'makes him tick' as an artist. His recent (and rare) DJ set at NYC's Hiro Ballroom was a sobering reality check in how important the man himself - apart from his band - really is. Talk aboutt DJ worship. The line was around the block and the entire dance floor was just jam packed with people.....staring in awe, lol, at a guy pushing buttons behind a console with nary a glance at the audience.
