Being only 21 myself, I never really experienced this, but apparently there was a time when MTV was "cool." Now I would have to agree that (when it's actually MUSIC-RELATED) all they do is spoonfeed "flavor of the month" to the mindless youth that will eat it all day long. Looking at the modern crap that's out today, I find it hard to belive MTV started with The Buggles. A band that most of it's audience today probably never heard of, and wouldn't give $.02 about.

I guess I'm still living in the past. I know when I was a teenager & discovered new wave/punk, I went out & searched out as much stuff as I could. There was no Hot Topic, no MTV, nothing like that. It was all late night obscure cable shows, zines at the local record store & digging through the import record bins to see what looked like it might be cool. Other than Creem, mainstream mags gave indie stuff next to no coverage at all & gigs in these parts consisted of some guys throwing together a cheap PA at a fire hall. So am I starting to sound like one of those bitter old fucks that talks about how "in my day, we had to walk 15 miles to school, and it was uphill both ways"?

Delurking to say that there was indeed a version of "California Dreaming" by the Beach Boys, albeit the Beach Boys of the '80s and not the original lineup. It was a middling-to-poor cover of a classic song and a real example of how the mighty Beach Boys had fallen in that decade. Though thankfully Brian Wilson's sane again and the Beach Boys legacy can once again be rescued.

Also, I'd say to continue to hold out hope for the "younger generation", that they'll eventually get passionately into the minutiae of whatever genre they're espousing a deep love for. I think the most obscure I got with my musical tastes when I was 15 - 19 (from 1995 - 1999) were, like, Japan, Ultravox, and Visage, but when I was 20 (i.e. in 2000) I found out about Classix Nouveaux and when I was 22 (in 2002) I found out about the New Wave Outpost, which has been educating me on all manner of great obscure New Wave artists from that point on, so I certainly can't claim to have always been an expert in the field of New Wave, even though that's been my favorite genre ever since I was 12 and my favorite videos on "Classic MTV"/"The Big '80s" were always the "New Wave" ones.

Alright, since I'm 16 and appear to be the youngest one here, I suppose I'll be the voice of the younger generation...
Firstly, the music. It's true that we, the teenagers, aren't as aware to the music that you all loved and still love now. Hey, you were there to actually live it. You were there when the songs were on the radio or you could buy the records in stores really easily, it was the music that was popular at the time, or at least that was around at the time.
Now that's not the case. The music that we have on the radio now is all complete crap like The Black Eyed Peas and Ludacris, that's what we're exposed to. God I know it's quite possibly the worst music in the world, but it's all that's on the radio. We aren't exposed to stuff like Naked Raygun and the Buzzcocks, so how are we supposed to know who they are?
Now, as for the girl in the indy rock/punk music store... Maybe she shouldn't be working there, but then again, maybe that's the only job she could find. Yeah, we need money for gas so we can drive to school, or the completely random crap we have the desire to buy. We just need money in general, so we get jobs. It doesn't matter where we work, as long as we get money. Maybe her only choices were the indy rock/punk store or packing groceries at Kroger, and quite honestly I'd choose the indy rock/punk store over Kroger even if I hadn't a clue about the music.
So just give us a break. Most of us aren't trying to be completely ignorant just to piss you off. We just haven't had the chance to hear any of the music you all love so much. Maybe in five or ten years things will change, some of us will be introduced to "your music" and we'll love it... But for now, we're only kids, we'll learn eventually.

I'm not too hard on you guys loving New Wave. I teach high school kids, and I'd LOVE IT if I knew any of my kids ( I have 150 kids a day) liked this stuff. A few years ago, one girl burned me a copy of The Shins and I gave her an A+. (just kidding!) Anyway, I don't discount her musical tastes, or yours. I think the original complaint that started this thread was that this girl in AN INDIE music STORE did not even appear to know the music which she was selling ! And THAT would piss any of us off!

I didn't mean to come off as being too harsh here, it's just that you would expect somebody in an indie store to at least have an appreciation for the stuff they're selling. And when I was 16, the radio was crap too, & it wasn't nearly as easy to find good stuff in record stores as it is now, at least not in my (rather reddened) neck of the woods. After all, it's not like I went in & asked this chick if she liked the Effigies or someone a bit more obscure, it was the freakin' Buzzcocks! they've been on TV commercials for fucks sake! Yeah, I think you're right on the whole Buzzcockz thing. She should at least have a clue who they are, I personally think they're amazing.
