I agree with Ghosty. In the 80's, New Wave was alternative. Until the 90's came and "Alternative Rock" ruined everything. Today the term "alternative" on it's own could mean just about anything. Nowadays you have to make the distinction between 80's A

I'm in agreement with devildog and golfer-New Wave pretty much ceased as a distinct entity until 1983-1984, although its influence has lasted until this day.

Beginning with New Wave:
New Wave influences Pop
Pop assimilates New Wave
80's Metal and "Alternative" are born in reaction to Pop

I do not know how rap can be so popular. I think it is hyped by MTV and everyone else who uses it as a way to make a quick dollar off of 13 year old kids who do not know any better.
