I couldn't agree more. Scott was VERY underappreciated. So was Farndon and Chambers for that matter. Chrissie Hynde was such a presence that it was easy to overlook just what a great band they were musically.

I always felt that when they died, the Pretenders went downhill fast. It was a different group & I always saw it from then-on, as Chrissie Hynde & some back-up musicians (although Martin Chambers was a great reminder of who they used to be.) The original line up was one of the few bands that were known as a "band" rather than guys playing with a charismatic female singer. But, I don't think their contributions were recognized until after they died.

As for favorite guitar solo - How about Ocean Blue's Between Something & Nothing - sonic, awesome - one of my favorites.

Hands down, one the most bitchin guitar solos in New Wave is Adrien Belew's spot on Talking Heads' "The Great Curve" from Remain In Light. This thing sounds like a dinosaur looking for a snack.

The Passions' "I'm in Love with a German Filmstar" ...I love the guitar in that song. Just perfect. The Rescue's "Tell Me Now" (former SOTW - - remember SOTW??) has a similar guitar sound.

I love the guitar solo in the Police's "Driven to Tears" off Zenyatta - - very tempered, evenly-paced song until this outrageous guitar comes in from another planet and wants to make a mess of things. So cool.

...and you really CAN'T say enough good things about what James Honeyman Scott did on those early Pretender's tracks.
