** The Top 500 NWO Song Results Are Up **

WOW! What a fine piece of number crunching, Freewave. I must admit we at NWO have some pretty fine taste in music. There were some surprises (I can't believe Peter Murphy - Cuts You Up only got 5 points, and they were all from ME, from me putting it in my top ten!), but overall I'm pretty pleased. Freewave, thanks so much for taking on this huge task! I've often wondered which songs are the favorites among us at NWO, and you've quantified that for us. Kudos!

Now that you've tabulated the results, will you continue to take new lists in the future (for people who didn't have the time to submit a list the first time)? If we get more lists from more people, the results will be more representative of the entire group of NWO members.

This list is not actually the <I>Greatest Hits[/i] of New Wave, but rather the top 500 favorite New Wave songs of those of us who really know and love New Wave. That's a big difference. The casual New Wave music fan on the street would be hard pressed to recognize even half of the songs on this list.

I think it was released in 1990 Makekineko (I could be wrong), so maybe some left it off their list? It's a great song, and deserves to be higher on the list for sure.

Funny thing is, a couple of songs aren't from the 80s at all[:D] Example: "Love Is The Drug"? 1975 album, [i]Siren[/i]. No complaints here, though. I'd go as far as their debut if it were in my power[8D] I'm surprised there aren't a lot of David Bowie, Madonna, and Cyndi Lauper songs[B)]

But it's not an 80s list...it's a NW list and the late 70s had the very best of NW.

Yeah, I realized it wasn't supposed to be a 'Greatest Hits' of new wave and didn't include many of the the more popular songs on my list either - and the four that I mentioned were not songs I chose myself to be included. I was just suprised they didn't make the list due to their popularity when they were released.

Wow. You're right. I didn't stop to think what year it came from, so technically, Cuts You Up probably shouldn't even be on the list (if we're going to split hairs and cut it off at 1989). I tend not to split hairs when defining new wave. (You'll note that I also included Roxy Music - Love Is the Drug.) For me, new wave doesn't have a rigid start and stop date. It's more intangible, a certain sound, a certain style, a certain mood--I can't put my finger on it, but I know it when I hear it.

New wave shouldn't be defined by the year a song was released. "Cuts You Up" is a Top 100 song - no doubt about it. I was just trying to figure out (along with you) how it was neglected. The release date seemed to be the best answer. BTW, your Top 10 kicks ass! New Order, Killing Joke, Joy Division, The Smiths, Echo and the Bunnymen, Talk Talk, Romeo Void, The Cure, Peter Murphy, Elvis Costello.....F*CK YEAH!!![8D]
