Thanks for playing everybody. I hope this list gives the flavor of why KROQ was so great in the early days. More than anything, the DJs just knew how to pick great tracks, singles or deep album cuts like Skinnytie so perceptively mentioned. No one does that anymore...but did anyone else ever really do that?

Like I said, I'll take suggestions and post some of those tracks.

Oh BTW, coming up next...Name That Tune WLIR with the help of some local NYC veterans.

Yeah, that forehead smack you heard was me. I've met Richard Barone on several occasions, and he's even offered me snacks (from Lloyd Cole's backstage spread, in fact.) Went to the last Bongos show at the Green Parrto in Neptune.

Didn't identify "Barbarella". D'oh!

I'm actually a New Yawkah by way of LA by way of Bahston by way of Ireland. The sad thing is that I was living in Bahston when the Human Sexual Response song came out. Granted, I completely hated them...

Um... yeah.

At least I recognized that one, brainfart and all. I couldn't even place #5. Never had any idea until now how utterly nondescript the beginning of that song is. I didn't get #7 either, which is weird, because I distinctly remember cursing out Jancee Dunn on TV for making fun of Richard Barone.

But, can you post a link to the UFO song by Caution. (Or email me). I gotta have that version. The only one I have is a crappy MP3 I made from a 12" radio promo I got on ebay. Your version (same one?) sounds great! Talk about a song that needs to be on a comp somewhere.

And some final comments. I was pretty wrong about which tracks would be the easiest. I thought the early ones were the least KROQ-centric thus easier, but I guess these were obscure nonetheless. The middle tracks seemed to be the soft spot instead. The latter early KROQ obscurities really lead me to believe that there are still lots of bands and songs that are threatened by extinction. All the more reason for the NWO and MikeP!
