Ohhh Ghosty... when you were in high school, I probably was playing with my little ponys and watching cartoons (especially if you went to high school somewhere in between 1990 and 1993).
However, I remember that when I was 8 I've already liked Garbage, U2, REM and Oasis (and for many years that were the only bands that really interested me). That changed more or less when I was 13 and became interested in alternative rock!! [:)]

I still can't get over the fact that all you guys seem to be dissing James Blunt. If it weren't for his song, I would never have experienced my first extra-marital affair (it was short-lived and shameful but man, it was kinda exciting...and i think every man goes through it one time or another... ah, yes. the power of mushiness).

I thought Angelfish and Garbage were fairly alternative back in the mid 90s. How much more alternative are we talking about here? Quien era mas alternativa que Shirley en ese entonces?

Most discos in Argentina put on cumbia villera (a style of music that probably you'd never heard before but if you would you would throw up), stuff like Ashlee or Gwen, national mainstream rock (which is dreadful), hip hop and dance music (but not the good one).
With alternative discos I'm talking about places that put on 80s music, industrial rock or 90s alternative music (Garbage it's obviously included into that category and it's one of the favourites of the DJs at any club of this kind). There are not many places like these in Argentina... there are more or less 3 of these kinds of places in Buenos Aires, which is Argentina's capital city. Caulquier lado donde suene la srta Shirley Manson cantando, es mi tipo de lugar para bailar (traslation: any place in which you can listen Miss Shirley Manson singing, it's my type of place for dancing).
For example, tomorrow I'm going to Requiem... the only disco in argentina where they put on some Siouxsie, The Cure, Gary Numan, Joy Division or Bauhaus.... it may surprise you but with the exception of The Cure, the other artists don't have many fans here and not many people would go to a place with that type of music.

PS: I still prefer Nick Cave to James Blunt.......... I haven't been brainwashed yet! [:D]

Cumbia? I'd probably dig it[8D] I didn't know that kind of music went as far south as Argentina. It's all over the tropics, that's for sure.

One thing is Cumbia from Colombia or other parts of Latin America.... and other completely different is cumbia villera.

Lyrics in cumbia villera usually are like this:
"Laura se te ve la tanga" (Laura your thong shows up)
"Eh cheto, te vamo a robar las zapatillas" (eh snob we are gonna steal your tennis shoes)
"Sentate en el pelado" (I will not translate this)
