I don't recall if there was a song that predated this, which had me sit up and take notice, but I remember One Step Beyond by Madness breaking the mould on our family's AM radio. My brother was all into it so, naturally, I thought of it as of the devil, until I realized that it was really catchy and fun. Mind you, we were subjected to my parents' 8-tracks of Ferrante & Teicher, Anne Murray, and Neil Diamond until we kids could afford a stero of our own. Perhaps somebody should have told Anne Murray that songs can be catchy and fun. Imagine where her career would have taken her...

my introduction to modern music, is owed all to my friend Joe Marsh.
in 1979 he had me over to his place after highschool.

he gave me a pop out of his parents refrigerator, turned on this little radio in the kitchen and on came blaring "beat on the brat, with a baseball bat, oh yeah". we listened to it for hours, till i had to go home, it was of course,,,,,,,kzam 1540 modern music, for modern people!

I was laying on the floor...and a commercial came on for some New Wave Hits of the 80s..by Time Life...

and the second song was 6 seconds from "Politics of Dancing" by Re-Flex. I downloaded it...and was hooked. Spent 2 years tracking down Humanication..then finally got it.

Now Im obsessed with this mess....all because of 6 seconds of that song.
The PoD album on CD was my first CD. Got it on Amazon for $6.
Now the CD sells for $200.
I lucked out on that one.

I was going to say The Cars or Tom Petty because their sound was atypical for what rock was back then but I think the one song that really got my attention as being new wave was The Police's Walking On The Moon. Other songs by The Normal (Warm Leatherette), Gary Numan (Are Friends Electric), Devo and the B52's followed soon afterwards.

I remember hearing it played at work on a rock station and saying...."what the hell was that". I waited 2 days to hear it again and write down the name of the singer. My life has never been the same.

I'm only 16, and when I was younger my mum always used to play Spandau Ballet and stuff on the record player, and I was so embarassed when she did it. But during the last couple of months I've really been getting into it. I think the first song that got me completely hooked was "Don't You Want Me Baby". It's amazing!

Oh, and I listened to "I'd Fly For You" for the first time yesterday, I had it on repeat for a good 45 minutes. Awesome.

I'm sure there were others, but the one song that has always stuck in my mind as a first was "Swear" by Tim Scott. I had it on my last computer and lost it when it crashed. I recently was re-aquainted with the tune from a fellow board member and I am forever beholden to her!! [:)]

So glad to read FightTest's post, good taste for a 16 yr old indeed! I thought all 16 yr olds nowaday are hooked on that lame MTV highschool "punk" genre of Lincoln Park and Simple Plan.

Got to agree, there, XTC--- I was all of about 11 when it came out and walked 4 miles in blistering heat to buy the single which cost me 88 cents. Spent all of the next week rollerskating in circles to it in my basement, walls resplendant with tin foil.

Warner Cable's "Video Concert Hall" was what blew me wide open though. Predated MTV by a coupla years-- I remember seeing Tim Burry's "Paradise Garage" videos, Squeeze's "Pulling Mussels"...it boggles the mind.

Wow, that is a tough one...like others, I saw Devo on SNL but I didn't actually buy any Devo at that time. I bought things like:

The Hounds - Puttin' on the Dog
Dead Fingers Talk - Storm the Reality Studios
Tuff Darts - S/T
Split Enz - Mental Notes (pre new wave)
