I was a junior in HS at the time and was working at my after school job at a deli. I convinced the deli owner to let me listen. I think it annoyed him and he sort of chuckled when Louis Armstrong or whatever it was came on next.

Got a call that next morning before school from my friend Bryan telling me to turn it on - that WLIR had sort of come back. (Not exactly.) I'm pretty sure we even wore black armbands in protest of WDRE. LOL. But eventually we broke down and listened.

One of the coolest things was at the Depeche Mode show the following night (12/18/97) at the Garden to have Larry the Duck and Donna Donna do the stage announcements and intro the band - somehow WLIR still had the "presents" on the show! Almost like a huge Irish wake for the station. (Even though WDRE had gone on the air that morning.)

Anyone else at the show?

It had to be for like a year after that at pretty much every big show from Erasure, Duran, INXS, U2, etc. that people would have WLIR signs and banners...

Wow...I'm listening to the 1984 show now. "Sexbeat" by Sexbeat! A classic from the Bat Cave compilation. I have this album on vinyl. I have the mp3 of this song. Does anyone know whether this album was ever released as a CD? I doubt it, but I thought I'd reach out to the very knowledgeable membership here.

Thanks ebbhead!
I'm shopping tonight!

Ben Manilla is the DJ on this show. He used to have the one hour "Midnight Riot" show. All hardcore punk. Probably Sunday nights, if I remember right. Anyone remember this?

It is available on itunes also, on "Gothic Essential Tracks".
I remember one of the members of Sexbeat posting here on the outpost but for some reason I cannot find the post.

Motnow, I've downloaded 5 of your 6 recordings and I wish to say 'thank you' for those memories. I had about 70 or so tapes spanning summer 1985 to late 1987 that contained LIR, BAU, FDU & FUV stuff. A disaster of sorts took them from me. You're helping me, in a way, to get a little bit back.

I was able to make lots of DRE tapes and recoup some of my music, but they just aren't the same. There's a certain nostalgia to being able to go all the way back to '85 and hear the DJ banter, songs no station I've heard yet play again (like "Euphoria") since then, and also get memories stimulated by certain songs because I'd be doing a certain thing at a time when I regularly listened to it. I dunno... does that make sense? There were some great segues on some of those tapes as well. LIR sometimes had a knack for playing 3 successive songs that kicked butt. It was a station that tended to play stuff that was really good and keep my interest over considerably longer periods of time than any other station in the area.

For me, LIR started to die in late '86. It still played solid stuff and did that through to its demise in late '87. But the frequency of the incredible songage seemed to go down after mid-86, at least for me. But even then, thru late '87, LIR played some awesome stuff, like Camouflage's 'Great Commandment'.

I slowly stopped listening in the early '90s, as the station seemed to play more "normal" sounding stuff. They occasionally hit me, but for the most part the station's idea of new music seemed to be stuff that resembled some weird folk music and trance. It just wasn't the same, edgy station anymore. I occasionally tuned in until I left NY in late 2001, but the only thing I enjoyed was the flash-back lunch thing. And what I don't get about this is that there were some really new-wavy sounding groups out there during that time that were newcomers, like Declaration, Cruxshadows, Iris, Faith Assembly, etc. I don't get it. And the college stations changed as well. I couldn't seem to find an alternative show on any of the local college stations anymore.

The internet has now become the key. IT is the radio now. It is the place for LIR (in its best form) and its ilk to live on. And it is because of the internet this great web site exists. Motnow, I thank you for the memories and to the site's management for providing a place for us who love and miss that station.

Hey Motnow, just in case this interests you at all -- and as my schedule permits -- I'm thinking about bringing these recordings into Sound Studio, breaking them up into tracks and then burning them to CD.

Hey, two more things Motnow: 1987 #s 12 & 13 are no longer downloadable. Also, do you have other years as well, like from 84 to 86?

Of course it interests me. I would really be interested in other shoeboxed recordings of WLIR that are currently sitting in closets, garages and basements all over the world.
Speaking of which.....
Vintage LIR-Volume#5 & #6 (from 1983 &1984)
-------------------------------------------
Two more LIR tapes from my collection...Enjoy!

If previously posted links are not available, don't worry, I'll get around to them again. FYI, there are a total of 16 WLIR tapes (spanning '83 to '87) that I converted to mp3. I have WDRE from '87+) too but their sound quality is questionble.
