New Wave Outpost Forum

This question should generate much discussion. And besides New Wave, what labels defined Punk, Mod, jangle-pop, and any other alternative genres?

I'll start by saying Stiff is the defining label of New Wave. You can take it from here.........[}:)]

I grew up on IRS. Indispensible.

IRS and Two Tone. OK so Two Tone is mostly ska... but still.

irs = king of jangle pop

factory/ rough trade and 4ad tied for post punk.

If it ain't Stiff it ain't worth a f*$# for U.K. Bands
I.R.S. for U.S. bands.
Bomp! for pop.

Oops forgot Sire. Ramones, Pretenders, Talking Heads and so many more...

I'd have to go with Stiff, at least in the U.K., and I.R.S. and Sire in America.

Cest La Mort: Was a nice little indie label from the US.

Here in Australia many UK bands were released on Virgin e.g. Japan, XTC, and locally we had Mushroom and Deluxe. e.g Sports, INXS, Dugites. or the independant label M Squared e.g. The Systematics, The Makers Of The Dead Travel Fast.[;)]

Virgin--don't forget they were the home of the Sex Pistols !
IRS--particularly in the States

For me, the definitive new wave label was Virgin.

E.G., I.R.S., Virgin and 4AD

Can't argue with any of your choices, but for a 'major' label, Sire was incredible. So many awesome bands - Undertones, early synthpop (softcell, depeche, etc etc), Ramones, just an amazing roster. Kudos to Sire.

In the 1980's, I lived & breathed everything that was Wax Trax! records in Chicago. I even have the logo tattooed on my arm to prove it![:D]
