Thanks to WaverBoy for shaking this loose...

For me it was Ministry - With Sympathy. It was in the cut-out bin in nowhere Alabama. I knew it had to brilliant or stupid. My friends kept asking, "Now, who is this????"

I have always loved it.

Toyah - Anthem.
I had never heard her before, but I saw the album in the import section in some basement record store & had to pick it up.

Seeing the painting of her with dragonfly wings, standing on a pyramid in some post-apocalyptic landscape...holding some guy's head...I knew it was going to awesome or awful. I loved it - it was unlike any the new wave I heard at the time (i.e. Top 40).

Some may argue that it's awful anyways & that could be true, but she always represented something really different to me & that's a big part of why I like her.

I had no idea who these guys were when I bought the album, even though I had heard "The Art Of Parties" way back in '84 and '85. David Sylvian in typical New Romantic drag along with the neon-white background sold me into buying it. The music was deeeelish[:)]

4 out of 5 Doctors - "2nd Opinion." Believe I got it in 1983. I had never even heard of the band before (good job, Nemperor), but that cover was irresistible.

Later in the year, I saw "The House on Sorority Row" (the slasher flick that they appeared in as the party band) at a drive-in, and though there was a song used in the movie that was on the record I had, most of them were not. Including one that I fell in love with. That was "Modern Man." And so I went out and hunted down their first album. I think that's the better of the two by far, but the cover art is nowhere near as good as "2nd Opinion's."

"Only a Lad" by Oingo Boingo of course. Bought it new, never heard of them but how could I resist? A boyscout with a lobster in a back pack?

"Virgins and Philistines" by Colourfield. Three guys, a stained glass window, no idea who they were, no idea the year it was produced, no idea at all, except for the fact that I knew I liked the aesthetic.

I would buy so much music just buy the cover art...
Joy Division,Xymox, anything on 4ad in 82 -87.
A Certian Ratio, Kraftwerk, Sister of Mercy all bands that I didnt know but I saw the art work that screamed my name from the record bin......
