I've not been around here alot lately and may have missed a previous mention, but just in case...
There's a book called "Rip it Up and Start Again: Post-punk 1979 to 1984" by Simon Reynolds. I found it in the local Barnes and Noble so it can't be TOO obscure.
I'm barely into it but I'm pretty excited so far. Not too far-removed from Griel Marcus' "Ranters and Crowdpleasers", another decent post-punk book.
(Simon Reynolds also wrote "Generation Ecstasy", a book on the early techno scene. A little too focused on the necessity of drug-taking at the raves IMHO, but still a nice discussion of the music from that era).
