What solo careers should never have been allowed to happen?

Sting; he was good with The Police and not so good by himself. If he ever makes another album, there should be a court ordered Police reunion.

Morrissey; The Smiths were pretty good in their day but Morrissey is now living under a New Wave death fatwah.

Who else's ego got the better of them?

IMO only, I think the Ian McCullough and Sting have both done some excellent solo work. I personally like all the Ian solo material, albeit not as much as with EATB, same with Sting. Again, just my thoughts, but Sting has done some exceptionally fine cove

I would say that David Byrne's solo stuff is somewhat disappointing. But Morrissey is probably the worst. I could never warm up to his solo works no matter how much I tried.

Debbie Harry's solo career spawned a bunch of songs nobody cared about. It was no Blondie. Hell, it was no Blondie's "Hunter", which was their worst album.

Agree with most of the above, except that I'm not a Sting or Morissey hater. I would add Ric Ocasek and the other Cars to the list.

Turning the question around, who did put out decent stuff as a solo artist after a successful stint in a band? Off the

Peter Murphy, Annie Lennox, Andy Partridge, Midge Ure, Mark Burgess, and Nick Heyward come to mind as good solo artists. Plus, Peter Koppes, Marty Wilson-Piper, and Steve Kilbey, all from The Church, have excellent and varied solo works.

Since most solo acts are a big, fat letdown, I think scramjet's question is more interesting... who was *better* after leaving?

Annie Lennox was very good, but better than the Eurythmics or Tourists?? Maybe.

I have to defend Morrissey's first solo albumn. It's pretty damn good (it was produced by Stephen Street and featured music by guitarist Vini Reilly). Plus his singles from that period had some great b-sides. Ever heard "Micheals Bones"? Great song. I

Andy Taylor, Duran Duran's guitarist, had a horrible solo career. Apparantly, he fancied himself a bit of a faux-metal god. Blech ![xx(]
