New Wave Outpost Forum

The recent topics have been about radio stations and clubs and I have to admit - - I HATE YOU...WE HAD NOTHING!!!!

OK, I don't hate you, I'm kind of jealous. Up-upstate NY had no new wave radio stations, no new wave clubs, no college music scene....

So, my discovery of new wave was initially word-of-mouth from a friend, but then strictly by reading magazines and then just trusting my gut in the record stores. I very commonly bought/special-ordered records by groups I'd never heard, just heard about. And those are the groups we're all writing about here daily.

Granted, by the time MTV came and I talked my parents into getting cable, I was able to hear AND see a Flock of Seagulls, Modern English and the rest. But before that it was all a crapshoot. And alot of the really good obscure stuff sure never hit MTV.

So my topic is - - are there other 'hicks' out there who got into the music? How did you get into it?? I will say the difficulty of my new-wave appreciation is what probably made it so long-lasting.

Sorry in advance for all the LIR/night club talk. IT must be awful for the whole rest of this board to read about us moaning about how good it used to be.

I too languished upstate NY for a spell in the 80's, probably not quite as far north as either of you two. I was located in the festering abcess that is Wallkill which is just a few miles from New Paltz. Whoa, did I hate it there.

On a clear night, if the stars were aligned, I could pick up 'Brave New Waves' also. I don't know when it began year-wise, but I discovered it around '88 to '89, with my clock radio on a sleepless night (it WAS on late).

I was in New Hampshire [:D] for the late 70s and early 80s.
The best radio show ever (4 hours, commercial free) was Alternating Currents hosted by Burt Thomas on WEVO, NH Public radio.
The records (no CDs at that point) were all his. He was playing Simp

You dont realise that this was the singularly best radio station here in the NYC area... We were fortunate in queens to get this station.. it was always the rough one.. I would only buy Alpine radios for my car due to the better

BTW: Someone suggested on another board that an online 'LIR museum be established and maintained by those of us who have the means to contribute memorabilia to it.
