New Wave Outpost Forum

I go to allmusic.com frequently and i get the sense that alot of the people i would never consider new wave or callded "post-punk" (depeche mode) and alot of the people i would consider pop are "new wave"(the go go's)Is this right?? Is new wave nothing but simple pop and post-punk the real alternative music? or is new wave just one genre with alternative and pop music co-existing???

You'll get a thousand different viewpoints on what post-punk is, but I believe those into "the scene" in the late 70's-early 80's have a pretty good idea in their mind.

you can be correct and take a narrow deffinition and say...
Gang of Four, Joy Division, Killing Joke and so on....

or you can take a post modern deconstructionist approch and personalise catagories and say "Post punk is what ever you want it to be..."

If anyone's looking for a great sampling of this kind of music I would highly recommend a 2 CD compilation called Rough Trade Shops-Post Punk Vol 1. Here's the track listing:

dang...that is an interesting list.. some of I havent heard of.

Superb album. I well recommend it as I do with all The Rough Trade Series. Some of the bands are quite new such as The Futureheads but hark back to the past! Andy Gill (Gang of Four produced them).

You got it! Cyndi Lauper was borderline new wave heavily leaning towards Top 40 early 80's pop, but I generally include her in the greater new wave circle. Indeed, Joy Division is considered one of the progenitors of the post-punk movement.

Is there a musician alive (or dead) that doesn't cringe when asked to categorize his/her music? This is obviously an exageration, but I've always hated sub categories. OK, I might want to know ahead of time if a band is R&B, Country, or Rock, but I'd rat
