Ketchup or Catsup?

You decide! Many a day I find myself in the supermarket frozen in place. Which do I choose?[?]

The Associated Press style guide, which I teach from advocates the use of the word Ketchup, however, my mother insists on using Catsup.

Neither would be good on bratwurst, only mustard or some fine white gravy

Back when it was only called catsup the marketers knew that most American consumers would never be able to pronounce it properly like the good folk across the pond and might mistake the product for something else so ketchup it has become. Gotta spell it like it sounds for the unwashed masses to catch on... [V]
