I'm a sucker for that swampy Morricone-inspired twang sound. The Birthday Party frequently nailed it, especially in songs like "Jennifer's Veil" and "She's Hit" and "Wild World." La Muerte followed suit, although it's been years since I've heard them. The Jet Black Berries made a whole concept album with Sundown on Venus. Fields of the Nephilim went a step further adopted the whole psycho-cowboy persona.

Who else did it (or does it) well?

"Far Side of Crazy" by post-Stan Ridgway Wall of Voodoo was a good one back in the day.

More recent recommendations would be "Utopia" and "Lovely Head" by Goldfrapp for some stunning Morricone-meets-John Barry 'scapes. Calexico frequently nails the style as well. Obviously, the Kill Bill soundtracks go without saying.

Calexico ... you're right Mike P.

The opening track to Crooked Fingers' "Dignity and Shame" lp is another good one...

..and of course the intro to the Black Eyed Peas "My Humps" video....(yeesh)!

Check out anything by Rubber Rodeo (especially their album "Scenic Views"). I think it's exactly what you're looking for.

By the way, Blakeh, you're right about Rubber Rodeo! I grabbed a few tracks I found online. That is pretty much exactly what I'm looking for!

Band from LA called 17 Pygmies (formed by former members of Savage Republic) did some killer spaggetti with their take on the theme to "Lawrence Of Arabia". Seek it out. Also the Fibonaccis (another 80's LA band) do a twisted instrumental called "Sergio Leone" among other soundtrack inspired madness...
