Fra Lippo Lippi singer Per Oystein Sorensen returns to Manila to perform classic hits at the Araneta Coliseum on May 13
For those who grew up in Manila, Philippines during the ‘80s, the songs of Fra Lippo Lippi enkindle the heart like fading photographs of youth or crumpled notes from lost loves. They represent a Golden Age in New Wave pop music with their trademark romantic crooning, jazzy piano, and heartfelt, poetic lyrics that sing of the beauty and madness in this world. To younger fans, Fra Lippo Lippi is the group that sang “Later,” a bittersweet love song that was played on a soap opera in 2003 and continues to seduce listeners on easy listening radio stations.
Presented by CANA Entertainment in association with the Ultimate Entertainment and Sutton Records, Fra Lippo Lippi’s own Per Oystein Sorensen will be treating fans to the hits that have become the soundtracks of people’’s lives in the Philippines: the soaring balladry of “Angel”; the profound heartache of “The Distance Between Us”; the deep-seated yearning of “Everytime I See You”; the afternoon glow of “Come Summer”; and the heart-melting empathy of “Beauty and Madness.”
Fra Lippo Lippi initially drew from the dark recesses of the post-punk movement. When Sorensen joined the group, the band began to venture into pop territory, utilizing synth-laden New Wave instrumentation and Beatles-esque hooks that reeled in an entire generation of Pinoys with albums such as Songs and Light and Shade. It is from those beloved records - and the most recent Fra Lippo Lippi release, In a Brilliant White - that Sorensen will be drawing from at the Araneta Coliseum.
Sorensen’s soulful, soaring voice, able to convey the deepest melancholy and the highest of affection, has mesmerized people from different generations and backgrounds. Heavily influenced by Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, the melodic, passionate tones of Sorensen’s vocals is among pop’s greatest treasures. Sorensen has been singing since the age of four, when he was rewarded with candy bars for doing so. When asked about his reaction to performing in the Philippines for the first time, Sorensen replied, “Shock. They seemed to know all our songs by heart. I mean, I'd been to Tokyo, U.K., France, Germany and several other places, never to receive the same attraction. Amazing.”
