Bryan Ferry's As Time Goes By? Others?

Anybody else like this "American songbook" style comp done by Ferry late in the 90s? I love this stuff. I loved it done by Lynda Ronstadt in the 80s, by Ferry and Diana Krall (Mrs. Elvis Costello) in the 90s...I only hate that crap done by Rod Stewart.

He's got some really nice interpretations of As Time Goes By (obviously), I'm in the Mood for Love, The Way You Look Tonight, Just One of Those Things and September Song. Of course Ian McCullogh did September Song better. [;)]

Were there any other "songbook" style songs done by new wave artists?

The [i]Lady Sings The Blues[/i] compilations are recommended. I have both and listen to those often. I also bought that Bryan Ferry album when it first came out. It is excellent. He's done albums of covers before, but this one is sssssolid[8D]

I really liked some of the songs on the original Red Hot & Blue comp. - U2's Night & Day, Jimmy Sommerville - From This Moment On, Annie Lenox - Everytime WeSay Goodbye, Jody Watley - After You Who? There was some terrible stuff on it too - but the few gems outweighed the crapola for me.

Yeah, that seems to be the problem with this stuff at the album level...occasionally great tracks but also blech fodder. I forgot about Sting's Someone to Watch Over Me from that same movie.

I think Elvis Costello tries his hand at this too but with less success. My Funny Valentine, She, But Not For Me.

I wish Bowie would cover some vocal standards he could probably really pull it off. He did that one cover of Wild Is The Wind back in the 70's.

Yes, half of that album is one of my all-time favorite albums.
